Nursing Excellence Award
On June 2 Clare Ceballos was presented with Nursing Spectrum Magazine’s Nursing Excellence Award for Community Service for the New York and New Jersey region. The Nursing Spectrum awards honor nurses in six different categories:
- Advancing and Leading the Profession
- Clinical Care
- Community Service
- Management
- Mentoring
- Teaching
The Community Service award is for “RNs who have made significant professional or voluntary contributions in community-based settings or community outreach efforts.” As a regional winner, Clare is now eligible for the National Nurse of the Year Awards.

New York Times 2010 Tribute to Nurses Award for Service to Community goes to Clare Ceballos
The New York Times Tribute to Nurses Awards were founded to help bring attention to the field of nursing by recognizing several nurses’ contributions to the field. The awards are given in five categories: Leadership, Education, Research, Innovation, and Service to Community.
The Children’s IBD Center’s Clare Ceballos was named the 2010 winner of the Community award. The winning nurses were featured in the New York Times Magazine on December 5, 2010. The New York Times noted that, “Ceballos’s devotion to the I.B.D. patients and their families is legendary. She has developed a variety of outreach and community programs to keep in touch with the 4,000 patients treated by Mount Sinai Medical Center each year.”
Mount Sinai Medical Center published an accompanying statement saying, “Clare’s work with patients and families and tremendous mentoring of nurses and other colleagues fosters great team work and the provision of excellent patient care.”

Mount Sinai’s Kravis Children’s Hospital is cited for excellence in pediatric gastroenterology
For the first time, U.S. News & World Report has ranked The Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital among the best children’s hospitals in the country. In the 2010-11 edition of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals,” Mount Sinai ranked in the top 25, out of nearly 100 hospitals participating, in two key specialties: gastroenterology and kidney diseases. Mount Sinai was ranked 25th in gastroenterology and 24th in kidney diseases, after having no specific rank in previous years.
“The Kravis Children’s Hospital offers services designed to meet the unique physical and emotional needs of newborns, children, adolescents, and their families, and we are dedicated to ensuring that these patients live long, healthy lives,” said Lisa Satlin, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. “We are proud to be recognized for our efforts.”
The Mount Sinai Hospital ranked 19th nationally overall in the 2009-10 “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, with high scores in 11 of 16 specialties examined by U.S. News & World Report. Mount Sinai was named on the magazine’s elite list of “Honor Roll” hospitals.
Mount Sinai’s Recognition of Excellence Team Award given to The Children’s IBD Center
On June 1st, 2010, The Children’s IBD Center was given Mount Sinai’s Team Award. The award is given “in recognition of and appreciation for exceptional team work which reflects our mission and standards of excellence, resulting in outstanding contributions to Mount Sinai and the community.” The nomination was supported by several wonderful letters of support from patients and families.
